E-Z-GO Golf cart batteries

What type of battery do I have?

First things first, you need to inspect what type of battery your golf car carries. Your vehicle may be powered by a 36 volt system, which are 6-volt batteries, or they can range all the way up until the 48-volt system. Inspecting what type of battery your golf car carries, gives a huge advantage of longevity in your golf car and its batteries.

How to charge your golf carts batteries?

Next focus point is determining what type of charger your electric golf cart carries. Your golf cart should already include a charger that is custom to your electric golf carts outlet or you can purchase the correct one at any golf cart supply store. Whether that be a 36 volt golf cart charger or the one that your electric golf cart came with. Make sure you are using the right charger that go in hand with your golf carts batteries.

Steps to charge your golf cart:

  1. Verify the golf cart battery charger by inserting the plug into an outlet and attaching it into the golf cart.
  2. Observe if the LED lights on your charger are on. When flashing red, this indicates that your batteries are significantly low and when flashing green, this means your battery is slightly charged. When turned on their solid state of color, it means the cart has reached its limit.
  3. The great thing about an E-Z-GO Golf charger is that most will automatically stop charging once the batteries are full.
  4. The process to fully charge your golf cart depends on the model itself but it usually takes about 8 to 14 hours.

Warnings to look out for:

Before we let you go, it’s important to go over some important warning signs so you don’t get caught in a hazardous situation.

  • Do not charge your golf cart inside the garage.
    • The heat and powered units create hydrogen carbon monoxide gas that should not get in contact with electrical currents. When placed in an area where there is no ventilation, electricity and heat should not go together. The safest way to charge your golf cart is 5-6 feet away from your home in open air, in a designated panel outlet that doesn’t get split between any other outlet.
  • Do not allow your batteries to sit in a low state of charge for an extended period of time.
    • Leaving your golf cart on low for an extended period of time may negatively impact the long-term performance of the battery. Especially if you have a non-automatic charger.

Maintenance

  • Check water levels
    • Regularly checking the water levels of your battery and filling them with distilled water will keep your golf cart running smoothly. Make sure you’re wearing eye protective wear and gloves because once the water comes into contact with the battery, it then becomes sulfuric acid that can cause blindness and severe burns.
